A crewed sailing yacht is the quiet way to see Italy. Where a motor yacht is built for port-hopping, a sailing yacht suits the stretches of the Italian coast where the point is the water itself: the Aeolian Islands off Sicily, the La Maddalena archipelago in Sardinia, and the passage across to Corsica.

The Italian crewed sailing fleet is small, so options move fast. Tell us your dates early and we will tell you honestly what is worth having.

Why Charter a Sailing Yacht in Italy?

  • Quiet, low-fuel cruising: engine off, sails up, and a noticeably smaller APA than a motor yacht
  • Built for the island groups: the Aeolians, La Maddalena, and the Corsica crossing are proper sailing waters
  • Time at anchor: a week spent swimming and eating aboard rather than moving marina to marina
  • Best value at the luxury end: full crew and chef for less than the motor equivalent

Broker insight

Sailing yachts are a minority choice in Italy and we are honest about that. Most of our clients here want Amalfi, Capri, and dinner ashore, which is a motor yacht week. But if you actually want to sail, the Aeolians and the run between Sardinia and Corsica are as good as anything in the Mediterranean, and the fleet that does it well is small enough that we can tell you exactly which boats are worth your week.

How Much Does a Sailing Yacht Charter in Italy Cost?

Crewed sailing yachts in Italy start at around €20,000 per week and run to €90,000 and beyond for the larger performance yachts. Because you sail rather than motor, the APA sits at the lower end of the range. On top of the base rate, budget for:

  • APA: 25-30% for fuel, food, drinks, and port fees
  • Italian VAT: 22% on the charter fee
  • Crew gratuity: 5-15%, based on service

Where to Go on Your Italy Sailing Charter

The Aeolian Islands off Sicily are the standout: seven volcanic islands close enough together for real day sails, with Stromboli erupting on the horizon at night. In the north, La Maddalena in Sardinia and the crossing to Corsica give you sheltered water and granite anchorages. The Amalfi Coast is possible but marina-heavy, which is not where a sailing yacht is at its best.

People Also Ask

Do we need sailing experience?

No. Every yacht we book is fully crewed, with a captain and chef or stew as a minimum. Take the helm if you want to, or leave it entirely to the crew.

Are there many sailing yachts for charter in Italy?

Fewer than in Greece or Croatia, and they book early. If a sailing yacht is what you want, come to us with dates rather than a specific boat and we will show you what is genuinely available.

Sailing yacht or catamaran in Italy?

A monohull sails better and suits guests who want the sailing itself. A catamaran gives more deck space and stays flat at anchor: see our catamaran charters in Italy.

How much does it cost?

From around €20,000 per week to €90,000 and up, plus 25-30% APA, 22% Italian VAT, and gratuity. See the full Italy cost guide.

When is the best time to sail in Italy?

June and September for steady conditions and fewer boats. July and August are hot, busy, and priced at peak, though the sailing itself is still good.
