Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are seven volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily, and they are the reason a lot of experienced charter clients choose Sicily over anywhere else in Italy. Two of the volcanoes are still active. Stromboli erupts every 20 minutes or so, visibly, all night, and watching it from the deck of your own yacht is the single strongest thing this cruising ground has to offer.

The islands are compact, the hops between them are short, and the character changes completely from one to the next. That combination is what makes them the core of a Sicily yacht charter rather than a side trip.

The islands, one by one

Stromboli is the headline. The standard plan is to arrive late in the day, take dinner at anchor off the Sciara del Fuoco on the northwest side, and watch the eruptions against a dark sky. It is a drift-and-watch stop rather than a settled overnight, and the crew will position for the wind.

Panarea is the smallest and the most fashionable, a whitewashed village with a handful of very good bars and a summer crowd that arrives by boat. Anchor off the islets of Basiluzzo or Lisca Bianca and tender in. Salina is the green one, the wine island, and the best food on the archipelago is in Malfa and Santa Marina.

Lipari is the largest and the practical hub, with the only real provisioning, the archaeological museum and the pumice quarries on its northeast coast. Vulcano is the closest to Sicily and the most sulphurous. Filicudi and Alicudi are the far western pair, barely developed, and worth the run if you have the days.

Anchorages and sea conditions

These are volcanic islands, which means deep water very close to shore and steeply shelving bottoms. Many of the anchorages are deeper than guests expect and some require a line ashore. Yachts without good ground tackle and an experienced captain have a harder time here than in Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast.

Marina berthing is limited across the whole chain. Lipari and Vulcano have the most capacity, Panarea and Stromboli have very little, and in August none of it is available at short notice. Plan on anchoring for most nights and treat any berth as a bonus.

The crossing from Sicily is 20 to 30 miles depending on the departure port, which is a comfortable morning run in settled weather and genuinely unpleasant in a strong northerly. The Tyrrhenian can build quickly here. This is a cruising ground where the forecast dictates the route more than the plan does.

Fitting the Aeolians into an itinerary

Most weeks board at Portorosa or Milazzo on Sicily’s north coast, both within an hour of Catania or Palermo airports, and both under 20 miles from Vulcano. That short first leg is why these are the bases we recommend. A seven-night week can cover the whole archipelago comfortably without a single long day.

Our 8-day Sicily and Aeolian Islands itinerary lays out the route in detail. If you are weighing this against the west coast of Italy, our comparison of Sicily and Sardinia is the honest version.
